Le French Festival 2025: A Nine-Month Showcase of French Arts and Culture

Le French Festival 2025, co-organized by the Alliances Françaises de Malaisie and the Embassy of France in Malaysia unveils a new format running from March to November. The festival features a variety of events celebrating literature, arts, cinema, music, gastronomy, and digital innovation. This year's program is centered around six thematic highlights, each designed to engage diverse audiences across Malaysia in the cities of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru and Kuching. This year’s theme focused on protecting our oceans and the environment aligns with the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference scheduled to take place in Nice, France, from 9 to 13 June 2025.



The event was attended by Mr. Laurent Elisio Bordier, Executive Director of Alliance Française of Kuala Lumpur and Co-Director of the 2025 French Festival; Ms. Mathilde Tallin, Cultural Manager and Artistic Director of the Festival; and Mr. Michel Gonçalves, Director of Alliance Française de Penang.


The six major highlights are:


March – Francophonie Month: 

The event begins with a celebration of the French language and Francophone cultures, featuring notable moments from the second Francophone Authors Festival held in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and the French School. The Écrire en français exhibition will showcase works from 100 international authors, and the film Rise will be shown as part of the Europe in Cinema program in collaboration with EUNIC Malaysia.


May – French Film Festival: 

The French Film Festival will showcase 13 films at Golden Screen Cinemas in Kuala Lumpur (15–25 May), Penang (22 May–1 June), Johor Bahru (29 May–1 June), and Kuching (15–18 May). This year’s selection includes titles Sugar and Stars (A la belle étoile), The Marching Band (En fanfare), Flow (Flow, le chat qui n’avait plus peur de l’eau), Beating Hearts (L’Amour ouf), Night Call (La nuit se traîne), Sailing Home (La vallée des fous), The Count of Monte Cristo (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo), The Rapture (Le ravissement), Chicken for Linda! (Linda veut du poulet !), Monsieur Aznavour (Monsieur Aznavour), Rosalie (Rosalie), A Little Something Extra (Un p’tit truc en plus), Infested (Vermines).


June – Music Month & Fête de la Musique: 

June places music in the spotlight with performances by Euroasia Sinfonia and Vox Suara Choir. The main event of the month features Fête de la Musique live music on 28 June at Titiwangsa Park, a public event held in collaboration with DBKL.


September – Le Petit Festival: 

Designed for children and families, Le Petit Festival will offer a series of creative workshops and interactive learning activities that encourage imagination and engagement.


October – Gastronomy Month: 

French cuisine will be in the spotlight with workshops supported by Paul Bakery with hands-on baking sessions including special menus offered by partner restaurants. The event also include food-themed film screenings like Sugar and Stars and Delicious.


November – Digital November: 

Novembre Numérique wraps up the festival with technology and culture programme includes virtual reality, gaming, digital art, webtoons and more.


Movie screenings for Le French Festival 2025 will take place at Golden Screen Cinemas in these cities and on the following dates:

Kuala Lumpur : 15 May - 25 May

Penang : 22 May - 1 June

Johor Bahru : 29 May - 1 June

Kuching : 15 May - 18 May
